Range Cattle Research & Education Center

2010 Youth Field Day

by Reyna Speckmann, Extension Scientist, UF/IFAS, Range Cattle Research & Education Center

One hundred and sixty three kids, parents, and 4-H leaders came out to the Range Cattle Research and Education Center for the 3rd Annual Youth Field Day. The full day educational program was organized by the Ona faculty and staff and county agents in the South Florida Beef Forage Program. Industry volunteers and University of Florida CALS ambassadors completed the speaker roster. The 2010 class list included Bug Free Beef, Working Cows, Packing the Cow Herd Pounds, Kelly Blue Book for Beef Cattle, Protecting Fingers Toes and In Betweens on the Ranch, Triangle of Fire, Weed Scavenger Hunt on Sweet and Sour Soil, and the Birds & Bees of Beef Cattle. Field day participants started the day receiving college and career advice from the CALS ambassadors and were able to visit school and industry trade show booths during lunch. The day was capped off by a live controlled burn demonstration on one of our native range sites. On behalf of everyone at the Range Cattle Research and Education Center and South Florida Beef Forage Program, thank you to everyone who shared the day with us as guests, speakers, and sponsors. We look forward to seeing you in 2011 for the 4th Annual Youth Field Day!
