Philipe Moriel was born in São Paulo city/Brazil, on October 01, 1985. He is son of Antonio Claudiner Felippe Moriel, a civil engineer; Selma Correa Gomes Moriel, housewife; and brother of Jessica Moriel, a pharmacy undergraduate student, and Barbara Moriel, biology bachelor.
Philipe received his Animal Science bachelor at the Sao Paulo State University (UNESP) - Botucatu / SP, in 2008. During the animal science program, Philipe did several internships on Dairy and Beef Cattle operations, and participated at the Student Enterprise of Beef and Dairy Production (CONAPEC Jr.) with his first advisor Dr. Jose Luiz Moraes Vasconcelos. Still as an undergraduate, Philipe and Dr. Vasconcelos developed and published, at the Journal of Dairy Science, research experiments with dairy cows on effects of carbohydrate source and degree of processing on serum concentrations of progesterone. In 2008, Dr. Bret W. Hess offered the opportunity for Philipe to study as an intern in the USA during 6 months on grazing beef cattle nutrition at The University of Wyoming.
In January 2009, Philipe started his Masters program at The University of Wyoming advised by Dr. Bret W. Hess, where he developed experiments with fat supplementation for postpartum beef cows, and biodiesel coproducts as feed supplements for developing replacement beef heifers. During the masters program, Philipe received awards including 1st Place at the Graduate Student Paper Competition for the Western Section of Animal Science Society, and Outstanding Master’s Candidate in the College of Agriculture in 2010, honored by Gamma Sigma Delta, The Honor Society of Agriculture, University of Wyoming.
On July 2010, Philipe moved to Ona, Florida, where he started his PhD program advised by Dr. John Arthington at the Range Cattle REC. At Ona, Philipe will work with effects of stress on feedlot beef calves growing performance and immune system, and creep feeding as management tool to alleviate the effects of stress on beef calves performance.
