Paulo Gustavo Martins
Paulo Gustavo Martins was born in Recife, Pernambuco state, Brazil, on February 08, 1982, and raised in Belo Horizonte, capital of Minas Gerais state. He is the oldest son of Paulo Cezar de Macedo Martins and Maria José Reis de Almeida Martins, who are both veterinarians. Paulo spent his childhood and youth between Belo Horizonte and Curvelo, a medium size city in the countryside of Minas Gerais. Curvelo, well know for it's great farm shows and beef cattle associations like "Associação dos Criadores de Guzerá" is also number one in reforestation of eucalyptus in Minas Gerais.
In 2000, Paulo began his Veterinary Medicine undergraduate program at the Federal University of Viçosa ('Universidade Federal de Viçosa' - UFV) - Viçosa, Minas Gerais. The Federal Univerity of Viçosa is known and respected in Brazil and abroad especially for the Agrarian Sciences, which is the most developed area at UFV and was ranked by Brazilian Education Ministry as the third best college in Brazil in 2008. As an undergraduate, Paulo was granted a Scientific Initiation scholarship from Brazilian National Council of Scientific and Technological Development (Conselho Nacional deDesenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico- CNPq) to participate in research with the Animal Science Department under advising of Dr. Antonio Bento Mancio.
Paulo received his veterinarian BS degree in January of 2005. In March of the same year, he began his master's degree at the same university with the Animal Science department under advising of Dr. Mancio. Paulo completed a trial with primiparous beef cows who received two different sources of mineral supplement, this was done to compare their reproductive performance during the post-partum period. On February 2007, Paulo finished his program, and aquired his M.S. degree.
In March 2007 Paulo started his doctorate's degree at UFV. During this time while Paulo was attending classes he also taught classes to undergraduate Agronomy, Veterinary and Animal Science students. He also gave lectures at other colleges and in a training program for a private company- the number one company in mineral nutrition in Brazil. In March 2008, Paulo started e-mail communications with Dr. John Arthington, to spend a year at Range Cattle Research and Education Center as part of his doctorate's degree program. In September 2008 he was awarded a scholarship to spend one year in the US as a visiting scholar. He arrived at Range Cattle REC, Ona, Florida in October 2008.
