Reinaldo Cooke
Biographic Information
Reinaldo Fernandes Cooke was born in the city of Sao Paulo / SP, Brazil, on May 08, 1979. He is the oldest son of Nelson de Burgos Cooke, a business administrator, and Rosangela Calocci Fernandes Cooke, civil engineer. Reinaldo spent his childhood and youth between Sao Paulo and Barretos / SP, his heartland. Barretos is a small town located between the largest sugar-cane, citrus, and beef cattle operations in the state of Sao Paulo, and is renowned by its huge rodeo festival, which attracts up to 2 million people during late August.

Reinaldo moved to Botucatu / SP in 1999, where he started his Animal Sciences undergraduate program at the Sao Paulo State University (UNESP), which is ranked among the Top 3 programs in the nation. Reinaldo became more and more interested and involved with cattle production. During the last 2 semesters of his program (March to November 2003), Reinaldo moved to Wisconsin, where he conducted research with dairy cattle nutrition, advised by Dr. Ric Grummer. Reinaldo went back to Brazil and received his B.S. in Animal Sciences in December 2003. Prior to that, Reinaldo had to write several reports and also give presentations about his experience in WI as part of the requirements for graduation, and received the greatest grade in the history of the College of Animal Sciences.

On July 2004, Reinaldo moved back to the USA to begin his Master of Sciences program at UF, advised by Dr. John Arthington. He conducted research involving the effects of nutrition on beef cattle reproduction. His entire field research was conducted at the Range Cattle Research and Education Center - Ona, from July 2004 to December 2004. On January 2005, Reinaldo moved to Gainesville to take classes and work on his lab analysis. His research was completed by October 2005, when Reinaldo started to work on his final thesis. At the American Society for Animal Sciences - Southern Brach Meeting, held at Orlando, FL on February 2006, Reinaldo presented his work at the Graduate Student Completion, which contained 16 participants from other southern schools, and received an award as the 2nd best research. On May 2006, Reinaldo finished his program, and became a Master of Sciences.

Currently, Reinaldo is working on his Ph. D. degree. He is further investigating how the reproductive efficiency of heifers and cows can be affected by nutrition, management and stress.

Reinaldo is married to the lovely Flavia Cooke, also an animal scientist, which is working with molecular biology and dairy cattle at UF-Animal Sciences in Gainesville.
