Biographic Information
    Joel (pronounced 'HO-EL') Vasquez was born in one of the southern departments (states) of Honduras, located at the center of Central America. He was born on the 31 December, 1979. He is the second of four siblings. His mother, Gladys Geraldina Guillen Rivera is an English teacher at a Public School in La Ceiba, Honduras, and his father, Jose Rigoberto Vasquez Avila is an Agronomist with a BS in Soils, from University of Florida, and a MBA, from Iowa State University, and is now working for a Non-Governmental Organization in San Pedro Sula, Honduras.

    Joel lived in the U.S. for one and a half years while his father attended UF. His family moved back to Honduras where Joel entered Mazapan School in La Ceiba, Honduras (www.mazapanschool.org/About/About.htm). Joel graduated from Mazapan High School on May of 1997. He then pursued a career in Agronomy at the Pan-American School of Agriculture "ZAMORANO" (www.zamorano.edu/ingles/index_eng.htm). He graduated as an Agronomist in the year 2000 and continued his studies at ZAMORANO, achieving a BS in Animal Science.

    Since Joel graduated from ZAMORANO in 2001 he has worked at his family dairy/beef farm and has done consulting at some other farms in the northern region of Honduras and Julio Rondons' Dairy Farm in Nicaragua. He also worked for ZAMORANO as a Dairy Farm Advisor, Dairy Cattle Instructor and Artificial Insemination Route Manager under the supervision of his undergraduate advisor Dr. Isidro Matamoros, and Drs. Miguel Velez and John Jairo Hincapie.

    After working several years in his native country he decided to attend graduate school. Currently, he is a Weed Science Intern at UFs' Range Cattle Research and Educational Center at Ona, Florida under the supervision of Dr. Brent Sellers. Joel is expecting to start graduate school in the fall of 2007.
Current Work
    • Research in controlling various weed species in South Florida and the testing of new chemicals to aid weed control technology.
    • Educating cattle ranchers on the importance of weed control, identification of weeds and pasture management through cost effective weed control technologies such as new chemical products, combination of chemical products, application rates and timings.
